 The popular show Undercover Boss recently featured a Subway corporate executive working in a franchise location. As it turns out, the location was in Buffalo, NY...in a church. The True Bethel Baptist congregation purchased the franchise in 2003 and has been operating the "Social Franchise" successfully ever since. Subway chose the location for the TV show to highlight the relationship in what they call their nontraditional franchise segment. The show highlighted several key benefits of the relationship including:

The concept of a Social Franchise has been around for over a decade and is most recognized due to the Ben & Jerry's ice cream franchise, referred to as Partner Shops, that were purchased by around 50 nonprofit organizations. Unfortunately, most of the franchises failed and have been closed, however, several other nonprofit organizations have continued their pursuit of benefit from the franchise model.
